1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Add your business name, address, phone, hours, photos, services, and a description. Keep it updated.
2. Get reviews
Ask every satisfied customer to leave a Google review. Respond to all reviews — positive and negative. Businesses with more recent, positive reviews consistently outrank those without.
3. Be consistent with your NAP
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. These must be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp, and any other directory. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your rankings.
4. Optimize your website for local keywords
Include your city and service naturally in your page titles, headings, and content. "Plumber in Edmonton" is better than just "Plumber." Add LocalBusiness schema markup so Google can read your business data directly from your site.
5. Build local citations
List your business on Yellow Pages, Yelp, BBB, local chamber of commerce directories, and industry-specific directories. Each listing is a citation that signals legitimacy to Google.
