5 Signs Your Website Is Hurting Your Business

March 26, 2025·4 min read·By HansiTech

Having a website is not enough — a poorly built one can actively drive customers away. Studies show that 75% of people judge a business's credibility based on its website. Here are the five most common warning signs that your site is costing you business.

1. It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Page speed is also a direct Google ranking factor — slow sites rank lower in search results. If your site was built on a bloated WordPress theme or loads images at full resolution, it's almost certainly too slow.

Test it: Google "PageSpeed Insights" and enter your URL. A score below 70 on mobile is a problem.

2. It Doesn't Work on Mobile

Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your site requires pinching, zooming, or horizontal scrolling on a phone — or if buttons are too small to tap — you're losing the majority of your visitors. Google also prioritizes mobile-friendly sites in search rankings.

Test it: Open your site on your phone right now. If anything feels awkward, it's costing you leads.

3. Visitors Can't Tell What You Do in 5 Seconds

When someone lands on your homepage, they should immediately understand who you are, what you do, and who you serve — before they scroll. If your homepage opens with a vague tagline, a stock photo, or walls of text, you'll lose visitors before they even begin reading.

A clear headline ("Plumbing & Heating Services in Regina"), a subline explaining your value, and a visible call-to-action button are the minimum requirements for an effective homepage.

4. There's No Clear Way to Contact You

If a potential customer has to dig to find your phone number, email, or contact form — they won't. Your contact information should be visible on every page, ideally in the header. A click-to-call button on mobile is essential for trades and service businesses.

Every second of friction between a visitor and contacting you reduces the chance they follow through.

5. It Looks Like It Was Built in 2010

Design trends move fast, and an outdated website signals that your business might be outdated too. Thin fonts, small images, Flash animations, or a layout that doesn't use the full screen width are all red flags for modern visitors. First impressions form in 50 milliseconds — your design needs to build trust instantly.

What To Do About It

The good news is that all five of these problems are fixable. A modern rebuild addresses speed, mobile usability, clarity, contact accessibility, and visual design in one go — and at a starting price of $500, the investment pays for itself with a single new customer.
